TRANSFER FROM NEW HAVEN TO MARTHA'S VINEYARD
Martha’s Vineyard - Day 1
Today we left New Haven for a few days and travelled into Massachusetts to visit friends on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. We set off at 8:30am and arrived on the island at 2pm, the journey involved a 2 ½ hr drive, a 45 minute ferry crossing and a lunch break.

We saw Turkey Vultures, Red-tailed Hawks, Blue Jays, Canada Geese, American Crows, Common Grackles and a Blue Heron from the car and Double-crested Cormorant, Herring Gull, Common Loon, and Great Black-backed Gull from the ferry.

When we landed on Martha’s Vineyard we were met by Lanny McDowell a birding friend of ours, Lanny took us straight to Charlie’s house where a Ruby-throated Hummingbird had been visiting his feeders for the last 6 days.

It took a while but the bird turned up and showed very well, we stayed for an hour having excellent views of it. We also logged; House Sparrow, Black-capped Chickadee and American Painted Lady Butterfly whilst there.

Lanny then drove us to a pool which was very near to his house, we searched for Wood Duck which eventually showed, we saw 4 of them including a most beautiful male bird. Two Pied-billed Grebes were seen too and a Common Grackle fed in the trees above us.
We had a lovely evening with Lanny & Melissa, a delicious dinner, nice wine, in their beautiful home which once owned by André Previn. They the most beautiful furniture and lots of art work on the walls, some of it painted by Lanny.
